Indigenous Monitor and Archaeological Field Assistant
Location:
3 days Monitoring – Current location is Covehead, PE
2 days working with the Archaeology Team at Bideford, PE (Home Office location)
Off-season, working with Archaeology Team and Consultation Unit
Position:
12 Month Contract beginning April 1, 2025, Possibility of Renewal
Full Time – 37.5 hours/week
Salary: $25.00 per hour plus travel

Role
The Indigenous Monitor and Archaeological Field Assistant will report to the Senior Archaeologist and be responsible for supporting archaeological survey, testing and monitoring as well as post-excavation artifact processing and related duties as required.
The role will include supporting the duty to consult process. This will include research, information management and correspondence support.
Qualifications
Education, Years of Experience:
- High school diploma.
- Interest or background in Epekwitk (PEI) history considered an asset.
Skills/Competencies:
- Participate in archaeological test excavation with particular attention to record keeping.
- Recognize archaeological materials and cultural features in surface and exposed subsurface contexts.
- Record, describe and document archaeological evidence in the field situation using photography, digital methods and/or notebook illustration.
- Describe and record site soil profiles.
- Participate in field data and artifact collection.
- Assist with post-fieldwork processing and recording of archaeological materials in the laboratory. This may include washing, sorting, cataloguing and describing artifactual and associated materials.
- Data entry of recovered materials into relevant L’nuey collections database(s).
- Participate in L’nuey’s archaeological site reconnaissance projects at Pituamkek NPR and at various locations with the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
- Ability to work independently when required.
- Ability to take initiative where appropriate and solve problems.
- Good verbal and communication skills.
- Candidate must be physically able to work in a construction workplace environment. This may include the use of hand tools and other equipment (e.g., shovels, trowels, buckets).
- May be subjected to adverse weather conditions including late winter season.
- Weather appropriate clothing, footwear and construction safety equipment is mandatory and must follow all construction site manager directives.

- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle, as well as Insurance.
