Kwe’ nitap – Hello friend,
One year ago, the historic Pituamkek Establishment Agreement was signed on July 4, 2024, followed by the signing of the Toquktmekl Co-Management Agreement on July 5, 2024.
Pituamkek, meaning “At the Long Sand Dune,” is the site of Canada’s newest national park reserve, located off the northwest coast of Epekwitk (PEI). It holds deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance for the Mi’kmaq people. Toquktmekl, which means “Tackling Projects Together,” is the name of the new co-management agreement for PEI National Park and Historic Sites. This is an agreement that recognizes the Mi’kmaq role in stewardship and decision-making across the Island’s protected places. Both of these agreements ensure the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq will have a seat at the governance table for these treasured lands.
These landmark agreements reflect a shared commitment between the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq and Parks Canada to work together in protecting lands and waters for future generations.
To honour these anniversaries, we’re highlighting news stories that celebrated these moments of progress.
