In a historic partnership, L’nuey, on behalf of the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils, and Parks Canada are inviting expressions of interest for board membership for two newly established co-management boards that aim to shape the future of some of Epekwitk’s (P.E.I.’s) most important protected lands and sites.
These boards will be involved with the shared governance of the Pituamkek National Park Reserve and the P.E.I. National Park and Parks Canada-administered National Historic Sites, providing strategic advice to the Mi’kmaq Epekwitnewaq Kapmntemuow (the Mi’kmaq Nation Government of P.E.I.) and Parks Canada.
“The establishment of these co-management boards is a significant step in ensuring that Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq voices are at the forefront of decision-making for our lands and waters.”

“By working together, we are honouring our inherent rights and responsibilities while fostering a future of mutual respect and sustainability.”
Recruitment is now open for members for two distinct co-management boards.
The P.E.I. National Park and Parks Canada-administered National Historic Sites (NHS) board will be responsible for areas such as Cavendish-North Rustico, Brackley-Dalvay, and Greenwich, along with Dalvay-by-the-Sea NHS, Ardgowan NHS, Skmaqn — Port-la-Joye — Fort Amherst NHS, Province House NHS and Green Gables Heritage Place.
Pituamkek National Park Reserve
The other position will be involved in the Pituamkek National Park Reserve, a newly protected area of deep ecological and cultural importance. The board member will have a commitment to ecological integrity, cultural preservation, and visitor engagement under the Pituamkek National Park Reserve Establishment Agreement.
Board members will provide strategic advice on management planning, incorporating Mi’kmaw culture and heritage, supporting ecological and cultural integrity, and promoting economic opportunities for Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq. Chair positions are also available.
“The Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq and Parks Canada have been working together for many years to honour the historic and contemporary Mi’kmaw connections to Parks Canada-administered places,” said Géraldine Arsenault, field unit superintendent, Parks Canada-P.E.I. “The co-management boards will ensure the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq have seats at the table for discussions and initiatives that advance shared goals and economic opportunities. The Parks Canada-PEI team looks forward to continued, meaningful collaboration with the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq.”
Board members will serve a four-year term (initial staggered terms of two or four years). The time commitment is up to 12 days per year for members and 20 days per year for chairs, with an annual retainer of $5,000 for members and $7,000 for chairs. Per diem rates and travel expenses will also be covered.
