Our History

Through the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils—composed of the Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations Chiefs and Councils—L’nuey is governed by the full First Nations leadership of the province.

The Mi’kmaq Epekwitnewaq Kapmntemuow (Mi’kmaq Nation Government of PEI) is the governing body of the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq, bringing together all Chiefs and Councillors of Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations. Epekwitk Assembly of Councils Inc. (EAC) is its corporate structure — the body that meets monthly, acts as a board, and administers two organizations operating in the shared interest of both First Nations: L’nuey and the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI. As the Mi’kmaq nation government, the Mi’kmaq Epekwitnewaq Kapmntemuow enters into agreements with other governments, including Canada, advancing Mi’kmaw rights, governance, and shared priorities across the Island. The EAC serves as the provincial governance body for collective Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq Rights and interests but does not conflict with the individual governance and interests of each PEI First Nation.

The Epekwitk Assembly of Councils Inc. (EAC) is the corporate entity which operates in the shared interests of both First Nations and in the interest of Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq Aboriginal and treaty rights across PEI. Effectively the Mi’kmaq Epekwitnewaq Kapmntemuow (Mi’kmaq Nation Government of PEI), the EAC brings together the Chiefs and Councillors of the PEI First Nations – Lennox Island and Abegweit. The Councils together serve as the governing board for the EAC. Referred to as the Assembly, it meets monthly and oversees and administers two organizations under the umbrella of the EAC: L’nuey and the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI.

The Assembly is responsible for guiding L’nuey’s work, including negotiation and consultation processes, as well as governance development that supports Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq inherent right to self-government. The Assembly provides direction to L’nuey senior management and staff in carrying out the organization’s mandate. As the rights-based organization for the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq, L’nuey provides the technical expertise and resources needed to meet the growing demands in these areas.

While the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils serves as the provincial governance body for collective Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq Rights and interests, it does not conflict with the individual governance and interests of each PEI First Nation.

The Epekwitk Assembly of Councils is the joint forum that oversees and governs organizations that act in the shared interest of Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation.

Comprised of the full Councils of both First Nations, the Assembly currently administers two organizations that are provincial in scope: L’nuey, and the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI.

L’nuey’s mandate is focused on protecting, implementing and advancing the Aboriginal and Treaty rights of the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq, including negotiations, consultations, and governance development.

The Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI’s role is to deliver shared programs and services on behalf of both First Nations, as well as serving as a Tribal Council, which provides services and technical supports to each First Nation’s administration.
