L’nuey works to advance and protect the constitutionally protected rights of the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq. At its core, L’nuey’s work is about advancing Mi’kmaw rights, ensuring Mi’kmaw voices are respected, and building strong systems of governance for the future.
Our work is guided by three central pillars: Negotiations, Consultations, and Governance Development. Together, these pillars guide and support how we advance, protect, and implement Mi’kmaq Aboriginal and Treaty Rights in Epekwitk.
pillar 1
Negotiations
Negotiations are a core mechanism through which the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq advance their rights and pursue resolution of longstanding injustices with the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada.
Through negotiations, L’nuey represents the collective interests of the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq, under the direction of the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils.
- We engage directly with federal and provincial governments to advance outstanding rights and title issues.
- Our work ensures that the spirit and intent of treaties, as well as constitutional protections, are upheld and respected.
- Negotiations are about more than legal agreements—they are about building stronger relationships, creating opportunities, and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
pillar 2
Consultations
The Duty to Consult is a constitutional obligation requiring governments to meaningfully engage with the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq when decisions may affect Aboriginal and Treaty Rights.
Through consultation, L’nuey ensures governments meet their constitutional obligation to meaningfully engage with the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq.
- This process strengthens the principle of free, prior, and informed consent — meaning the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq must be consulted before decisions are made, not after.
- We review and respond to projects, policies, and developments that may impact Mi’kmaw rights and interests, and engage directly with proponents and government bodies throughout the consultation process.
- Each consultation response is informed by a range of considerations — including Mi’kmaw history, environmental and archaeological significance, and the potential impacts on lands, waters, and Treaty Rights.
pillar 3
Governance Development
Governance development is the foundation upon which Mi’kmaw self-determination is rebuilt — strengthening the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq’s capacity to lead their own governance systems, and ensuring public understanding of Mi’kmaw rights keeps pace with progress at the negotiations table.
Through governance development and communications, L’nuey works to build the conditions necessary for lasting Mi’kmaw self-determination in Epekwitk.
- Governance development builds the capacity to lead and implement negotiated agreements.
- Clear communication of Mi’kmaw rights fosters public understanding and backing.
- When communities are informed and engaged, negotiated outcomes become a foundation for future growth and collective success.
