Governance Development

L’nuey supports the path toward re-establishing Mi’kmaw self-governance in Epekwitk through governance development and communications. This work builds the foundation for lasting self-determination — ensuring that Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq have the tools, knowledge, and capacity to lead their own governance systems while strengthening public understanding of Mi’kmaw rights.

All governance development work is carried out under L’nuey’s mandate from the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils.

Ni’n aq No’kmaq means “Me and My Relations” in the Mi’kmaw language. A community-led process to determine who can exercise Aboriginal and Treaty rights in Epekwitk, and to ensure we take care of the lands, waters, and resources that have sustained us for generations.

The Epekwitk Nationhood Gathering is called Maw-Lukuti’kw, a Mi’kmaw phrase that means “we work together.” A bi-annual gathering for Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq to come together as one — to learn, discuss, and shape our shared path forward.

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (UNDA) became law in 2021. It commits Canada to align federal laws with UNDRIP and to advance true reconciliation through Indigenous-led action.

Advancing Mi’kmaw self-governance requires more than agreements. It requires readiness, understanding, and unity. Governance development is about preparing for that future:

Strengthening Mi’kmaw governance structures and institutions.

Empowering community members through knowledge and participation.

Building public understanding and support for Mi’kmaw rights.

Creating the conditions for self-determination that endure across generations.

Together, these efforts form a cornerstone of L’nuey’s mission: to advance the rights and self-determination of Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq through strong governance, informed engagement, and lasting partnerships.
