Maw-Lukuti’kw – Nationhood Gathering

The Epekwitk Nationhood Gathering is called Maw-Lukuti’kw, a Mi’kmaw phrase that means “we work together.” A bi-annual gathering for Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq to come together as one — to learn, discuss, and shape our shared path forward.

The third Maw-Lukuti’kw brought the nation together again to discuss the road forward. The evening opened with a feast and a performance by the Mi’kmaq Heritage Actors. Chief Darlene Bernard spoke to the path to prosperity for the Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq, Executive Director Jenene Wooldridge shared the year’s progress, and Senator Brian Francis spoke to confronting the violence of denialism. Chief Junior Gould closed with a vision of a thriving Nation and a brighter future.

November 5, 2022

The second Maw-Lukuti’kw brought community, leadership, and partners together to discuss the road ahead. Chiefs Darlene Bernard and Junior Gould opened the day with reflections on self-government. Senior Negotiator Tracey Cutcliffe shared progress on negotiations, and Zabrina Whitman and Julie Lush spoke to Ni’n aq No’kmaq — defining who is Epekwitnewaq Mi’kmaq. A facilitated Visioning Session gave everyone in the room a chance to help shape the Nation’s priorities.

Maw-Lukuti’kw, The Epekwitk Nationhood Gathering took place on Saturday September 28, 2019 as the inaugural meeting of the Mi’kmaq community of Prince Edward Island to discuss the future of governance and nationhood in Epekwitk. Approximately 120 people were in attendance, and Chief Darlene Bernard and Chief Junior Gould spoke to the significance of the session and the hope for the future. The Gathering laid the foundation for the engagement and visioning work that would follow, and marked the launch of L’nuey.
