L’nuey prepares to launch “Foundational Terms” campaign on Aboriginal and Treaty Rights

What do the terms “Rights,” “Reconciliation,” “Title,” and “Treaty” mean? These are important concepts in relation to the Mi’kmaq of Prince Edward Island, and concepts that many Islanders don’t fully understand.

L’nuey will be launching a “Foundational Terms” awareness campaign beginning on January 13, 2021. The campaign will roll out over the next number of weeks with each week highlighting one of the four terms.

The “Foundational Terms” campaign is the first of many education and awareness initiatives that will be rolled out by L’nuey in 2021. “There are many things that Islanders still don’t understand about Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and it is our job to help make these concepts clearer,” said Jenene Wooldridge, Executive Director of L’nuey. “We can’t expect Islanders to understand the significance of these Rights, or the important work that is happening right now in PEI with regard to Mi’kmaq Rights and Reconciliation, if we don’t take the time to help people understand the basics.”

The campaign will include social media, radio, print, and television ads and will feature members of the Epekwitk Mi’kmaq community.

“We know that education and awareness are crucial in moving forward with true Reconciliation in this province,” said Chief Darlene Bernard of Lennox Island First Nation. “If people don’t understand what Rights are, what Title means, or the significance of the Treaties, then how can we expect Islanders to understand and respect our rights as Mi’kmaq people?”

“Rights and Reconciliation are words that we hear a lot, but they’re not always understood,” added Chief Junior Gould of Abegweit First Nation. “We’re hoping this campaign will help provide clarity and understanding, and in turn foster greater respect for the Mi’kmaq and our constitutionally protected rights.”
