Discussions regarding the implementation of a Treaty Protected Fishery in Epekwitk (PEI) are still underway at the community level and with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Councils from both First Nations are continuing to consider all information and will only take steps to launch a treaty fishery when all input and planning has been completed.
The Chiefs are very concerned with the safety of PEI’s Mi’kmaq fishers and the potential risk they are facing as a result of Minister Jordan’s inaccurate and inflammatory statement of March 3, 2021. In addition to all other factors, this is a priority consideration for the First Nations in the treaty fishery planning process.
Currently, the First Nations are focused on preparations for the upcoming commercial fishery season.
L’nuey’s education and awareness campaign related to the treaty protected fishery, launched on April 12, is also coming to a close over the coming week. However, all Islanders are encouraged to regularly visit L’nuey’s website as content is refreshed and available.
